It's All About The Story
The pursuit of story has been a passion of mine all of my life. Where they take me, who takes me there, and ultimately, and what do they mean?
But more than anything, I wanted to be the teller. Maybe you do too. Maybe that’s why you’re here.
After over 20 years in the video game industry and 10 years teaching students of all ages and backgrounds, I have the experience, expertise, and methodology for passing the skill of story craft on to others.
Most importantly, I absolutely love it.

While the core of storytelling is much the same across all media, game writing has a number of elements and methodologies that are specific to the medium, not least of which is player choice. Creating a compelling story is essential, but it must be married to the agency of the player as they participate in and cause the story to unfold. Subscribe below to instantly get an concise rundown of the key areas of difference and a peek at just some of the topics the mentorship will cover.
A writer in the video game industry does a lot of stuff, not all of it strictly writing. Writing work within a AAA video game studio is an extremely varied and collaborative effort. There are dialogues and text elements to write of course, but a writer's involvement in world-building, quest and mission design, and narrative direction make the job a multifaceted contribution at all levels and at all phases of the of development cycle, from ideation to launch.
As with all things, it begins with an interest that develops into a passion. For many, one follows the other almost inescapably. Loving story and and experiencing it is just the first step. But understanding the workings within and discovering and developing the skills to execute on them is even more compelling to explore. Passion and skill is all you need. Seriously.
It requires understanding the creative process within the context of game development. It requires knowing how a writer collaborates and contributes to the many others involved at every stage of the development cycle. It requires knowing why it is important and how to make it count.

"I got a job in the industry within my first year!"
"If every teacher I had was as kind, enthusiastic and knowledgeable as Lorne, I would have had an impossible time choosing which industry to work for. Luckily for me, Lorne has over 20 years of professional experience in my favourite field: video games."
- Amy
"...inspiring and enriching..."
"I took a class taught by Lorne on writing for video games and came out of it with tools I use daily. I learned how to structure and write stories as in script form, craft character bios and how to reference them when trying to keep a character consistent, and more. Beyond the lessons, Lorne fostered an incredible student-teacher relationship and cultivated a collaborative environment where we all supported and learned from each other. It was an inspiring and enriching experience that has greatly influenced my approach to storytelling in all it's forms, not just video games."
- Kevin Asla
"...clear and incredibly helpful."
"Lorne’s classes were insightful and fun and I learned so much from participating. The information I gained not only improved my writing but also my understanding of the practice and my workflow. The biggest part of taking Lorne’s class, for me, was the feedback I got from Lorne which was clear and incredibly helpful."

"I genuinely had fun."
"Lorne created a space where I felt safe and welcome to ask questions and give my opinion. I've been writing for a long time and I even studied Creative Writing, Lorne showed me that there's always something new that can be learned. All the knowledge I gained made this learning experience so enjoyable for me and I'm really grateful for that."
